Getting back on the wagon....

So this time last year I was fit (like super duper fit) and healthy. Right now I'm... less so. I'm still fairly fit, but over the last 6 months or so I've put on a bit of weight and am feeling pretty blergh as a result. And so its time to get back on the good food and exercise wagon! And along those lines I thought I'd share some yummy recipes - who says healthy food can't be delicious??
I've signed up for the 30 Day Green Smoothie Challenge for October, which really just involves drinking a green smoothie every day for a month. They'll send me recipes and shopping lists which is good since I can be a little un-creative with smoothies for some reason. It hasn't started yet, but I gave their Beginners Luck smoothie a go the other day and it was pretty darn tasty.

Beginner’s Luck Green Smoothie

2 cups spinach, fresh (tightly packed)
2 cups water
1 cup mango
1 cup pineapple (I didn't have pineapple so I used nectarine, different but gooood)
2 bananas

One of my friends put me on to @beingmybestme on instagram recently. She posts some pretty great healthy food porn, complete with recipes. If you're an instagrammer like me then (1) you should follow me, and (2) you should check @beingmybestme out. The recipe that immediately jumped out to me was (surprise surprise) some very chewy gooey cookies. And only 3 ingredients. One of which being medjool dates, a recent obsession. Ohhhh yeah!

Chewy Choc Chip Cookies

8 medjool dates
1/2 cup almond meal
1/4 cup cocoa nibs (so... I didn't have these so I used dark choc chips)

Blitz all ingredients in a high powered blender or food processor. Roll into 8 balls and flatten into cookies on an oven tray. Bake in a 140 degree celcius oven for 10 mins (for chewy cookies) or 15 mins (if you like em a bit crispier).
And last up, more cookies. I wanted to play around with my chocolate chickpea cookies and see if I could get them to be totally refined sugar free without ending up well... gross. And happily, I had success! In two formats!

Chocolate Chickpea Cookies

1 Can Chickpeas
1/2 Cup Almond Butter
8 Medjool Dates
2 Teaspoons Vanilla Paste
1/2 Tsp Baking Powder
Pinch Salt
2 1/2 Tbsp Cocoa Powder
1 Decent Scoop Chocolate Protein Powder
About a Tsp of Milk (or Soy or Almond Milk if you want to make them vegan)
Variety 1:
A Good Handful of Dried Cranberries
Variety 2:
More Medjool Dates!
Sugar Free Maple Syrup
Preheat the oven to 180°C.
Chop up the dates and mix them with a little hot water until a thick paste is made.
Combine all the main ingredients in a food processor and mix until super smooth. I tend to do this in stages, just to be kind to my processor.
For the first variety transfer mixture to a bowl, and mix in a couple of big handfuls of dried cranberries. Take large tablespoons of mixture and place them on lined baking trays and spread them a little to make them cookie shaped.
For the second variety, take large tablespoons of mixture and place them on lined baking trays and spread them a little to make them cookie shaped. Place half a medjool date in the middle of each cookie.
Bake for 17 minutes. Cool on racks. Drizzle the date cookies with a little maple syrup. Both varieties are pretty great...
After all these cookies getting back to being healthy doesn't seem quite so bad anymore...

Weekend Wedding Fun

So, another weekend, another wedding. I've definitely hit that 'all of my friends are getting married' age. Which as a single girl can get a wee bit depressing. But luckily for me I'm a soppy romantic who loves to see the different ways people celebrate their love. Also weddings are a good chance to get all pretty!
This particular wedding was interesting because the couple hadn't hired a photographer, instead putting the call out to all of their guests to bring their cameras along to record the event for them. The threat of hundreds of cameras caused me to feel the need to get a new pretty dress to wear, and this polka-dotty Princess Highway number fit the bill perfectly. I feel I'll get rather a lot of future use out of it so... win!
The wedding was beautiful (in a very trendy inner city bar, the couple wrote their own vows and handed out 'Slow Down' and 'Throw Down' cheesy wedding music CDs) and a good time was had by all, even though I had the beginnings of the flu bug that is currently kicking my ass...
I hope you're all having a good week - almost halfway through!

Clever Girl...

Oh Man you guys. Seriously. The material above is a DRESS. You should have heard the squeals of delight when I happened upon a dress covered in Velociraptors. And then when I tried the dress on and it was the comfiest ever? Pure joy!
I know a lot of people when finding this would be like... "but how often will you actually wear a dress covered in dinosaurs?" Well for me the answer is super often. I wear this casually with sneakers like I did today, I dress it up a bit with heels and a nice jacket and wear it to work... obsessed.
This is my 'Link' beanie, I always feel kinda like I should be roaming around Hyrule smashing pots and cutting grass with a sword when I wear it. Which I am totally OK with. And my shoes? Well I bought those after marathonning 7 seasons of Dr Who. I blame David Tennant. (not a geek at all...)
I wore this nerdtastic outfit to head into the Polka Dot Vintage markets today. These markets are huge. I always find a few treasures there and this time was no different. Very productive day...
Also, you might have noticed the new widget at the side of my page. I've set up a Flickr account! I figured, I take so many photos around the place it'd be good to have somewhere to stick them, so if you would like to check out my pictures have a look! If you're on Flickr add me as a contact - I'd love to see your photos too!!

And now I think I'll go watch Jurassic Park...

All of the girly.

Ahhh to be four. Today was my little second cousin Sonja's birthday party and she is definitely a girly girl. On the menu, princess Aurora dolly varden cake. I've never made one of these before so I was quite pleased with how she came out.
Sticking with the theme of all things pink and pretty I decided pink and glitter on the eyes, flower crowns and a long flowy pink skirt would be the way to go for this one.
I even curled my hair for the occasion. I should make the effort to do that more often, I really do like it.
I hope you are all having joyful weekends!

Big Ships, Mini Pirates

Last weekend, Fremantle played host to three very cool Dutch tall ships. I'm always keen to check out anything even vaguely piratey, and boats provide such awesome detail for photography, so despite the rain and very threatening clouds, my parents and I trekked out to check them out. And it was totally worth it. Aside from the ships being awesome, there was also a 'kids dressed as pirates get into the maritime museum for free' deal going on, so there were mini pirates running around the place too. Super cute.

So much texture (and one pretty cute dutch sailor) - its like a perfect photo expedition for me. I've been trying to force my body back to fitness this week by just throwing myself headlong into exercise (my poor poor body doesn't know whats hit it!), which has made finding time to take outfit photos a little tricky, but I'll try to get back to it soon. I hope you're all having a fabulous week - almost the weekend again!
